James Burns McDowell

James Burns McDowell, 79, died Sunday, January 11, 2015 at his home in Sherman Oaks, CA. A celebration of his life was held in Sherman Oaks Saturday, January 17, 2015.

Jim was born May 19, 1935 in Philadelphia, son of the late James Russell McDowell and Kathleen Burns. Jim graduated with the Bradford High School class of 1954, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958, and graduated from the Dickinson School of Law in 1962. Jim was a long-time corporate attorney for the Prudential Insurance Company of America and a certified Major League Baseball Player Agent. He coached youth league baseball over several decades, during which time he coached his son Jack, who went on to become a significant Major League Baseball player (3-time All Star and the 1993 American League Cy Young Award Winner). Jim was also an animal lover, social commentator, and a skilled driving instructor.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judith (Bradford High class of 1954), daughter Jamie, sons Jim (wife Maureen), Jeff (wife Ann) and Jack (wife Kerrie), 7 grandchildren Lucas, Emmett, Olivia, Molly, Rhett, Casey and Rory, as well as sisters Karen Phillips of Bradford, Marsha Sands (husband Bob) of Norwalk, OH and Barbara Lockman (husband Scott) of Washington D.C. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister Kathy, and his close friend Roo.
