A letter to Rob. You were my first nephew. Oh how I hated you then loved you. I was only 9 when my mom informed me I was to be an Aunt. We were going to have a new baby! “No.” I said. “I’m the baby of the family! We don’t need another.” She bought me a new baby doll so I could learn how to care for you. The first thing I did was tear its arm off while trying to put a onesie on it. Really it was an accident but my mom yelled at me as if I did it deliberately. I then knew I was going to hate you. But then you were born. The first time I saw you, I fell in love. So did your grandma. We vied for your attention. When your mom needed a sitter, Grandma and I were ready. When your mom and dad spent their vacations in Canada, we had a room ready for you. And when their vacation was over and they came to get you, we had a hard time parting with you. For weeks after we’d look into the empty crib and cry. We were there when you took your first steps and said your first words. I’d like to think they were “Aunt Steph” but actually I think they were “Dada.” But it didn’t matter. You were such a joy to us. As the years went by we went our separate ways. Me to Baltimore to start my own family and you eventually to Florida to start yours. But you were never far from my thoughts. With only 9 years between us you were my baby brother. I was glad to give up the baby title to you. Take care of your mom and dad for me. They are very special people. Love, Aunt Steph
