Thomas H. McDowell

Thomas H. McDowell, 76, of San Diego, CA, formerly of Bradford passed away Wednesday May 10, 2017, at his home.

Born August 22, 1940, in Bradford, he was the son Tom L McDowell and Dorothy Hyatt McDowell.

He graduated from Bradford High School in 1960.  In 1964 he graduated from Colorado College and after some travel settled in California.  First in San Diego, he worked for Chubb Insurance. After two years in Los Angles he was transferred back to San Diego.

Most of his professional career was in San Diego in the insurance claims business.  After Chubb, Tom took a position with Golden Eagle Insurance becoming Vice President of the company. Later he formed his own company MAC Adjusting which he operated successfully for over 20 years. He sold it and retired in 2006.

He participated in the San Diego County Voices for Children Program providing mentors for minor in the court system and was on the Board of Directors of Turning Point, a program sheltering unemployed women with a history of addiction.

Tom was most kind and generous especially to those who received bumps and bruises navigating life but he did not suffer fools lighly and was the first to put a pin in the balloon when a friend’s ego became over inflated. His dogs were a great comfort and joy to him in good times and bad.

Surviving are his wife, Jewel, brother, Richard (Ruth) McDowell and a step daughter, Stacy, and five step grandchildren and one step great grandson.

Preceding him in death are his parents and his wife, Barbara.
