Frederick C. Henke, 80, of 326 Seaward Avenue, Bradford, passed away Friday, September 29, 2017, at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born October 9, 1936 in Kane, he was a son of the late Frederick E. and Ida F. (Hummel) Henke. He was a 1954 graduate of Bradford High School.
On June 21, 1958 in St. Francis Church, he married Carol (Farrell) Henke who survives.
Fred started his landscaping career at an early age. He started at Johnstone Nursery in 1958. He later started Henke Landscaping which he ran for several years. In 1986 he began working as a groundskeeper at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford where he retired in 2001.
He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, the NRA, and the Bradford Sportsman’s Club.
Fred was a pitcher in local Semi-Pro Baseball Leagues, and an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt. His greatest joy came from watching his grandchildren play sports. Fred loved to produce maple syrup and spend time at the camp.
Surviving in addition to his wife Carol of 59 years, are three daughters, Kathy (Dave) Moonan, of Bradford, Karen (Allen) Whitaker, of Plymouth MA, and Kristin (Dave) Mackey, of Beavercreek OH, one son, James Henke, of Lancaster PA, six grandchildren, Phillip and Erik Whitaker, Matthew Moonan, Grace, Curtis, and Craig Mackey.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John E. Henke.
Friends will be received on Tuesday October 3, 2017, from 10:00am to 11:30am in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc. 33 South Ave., at 11:30 a prayer service will be held followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Noon in St. Bernard Church with Rev. Raymond Gramata, Pastor, as Celebrant. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford for the Fred C. Henke Landscape Fund or the UPB Athletics Program, 300 Campus Drive, Bradford PA 16701, the Bradford Township Volunteer Fire Department or the charity of the donor’s choice.
