Richard Dick Edel

Richard P. "Dick" Edel, 84, formerly of Brown Avenue, Bradford passed away Friday, October 19, 2018 at Forestview Health Center, in Erie where he had been a resident since January 2018.

Born October 11, 1934 in Bradford, he was a son of the late C.P. "Bud" and Ethel B. (Story) Edel.

Dick was a 1954 graduate of Bordentown Military Institute, Bordentown NJ. He attended the Institute on a football scholarship. While attending Bordentown, he achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

On June 27, 1959 in St. Bernard Church, he married Helen (Lyons) Edel who passed away November 29, 2008.

Dick owned and operated General Roofing Company for over 20 years. His father Bud started the company in 1937 and upon returning from Bordentown, Dick worked for his father until taking the business over in 1980. Mr. Edel and his father Bud owned and operated General Roofing Company for over 65 years in Bradford.

After retiring from General Roofing Co. in 2000, he and Helen moved to Padre Island, Corpus Christi, TX, where they enjoyed many years of warm weather, sunshine, and island times. They enjoyed fishing, boating, kite flying and socializing with friends. Dick continued his passion for carpentry and gardening around his home on the water. He recently returned to the area to be closer to his children.

He was a member of St. Bernard Church, Saint Andrew by the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Texas State Aquarium, Texas Parks and Wildlife, life member of Safari Clubs International, and National Rifle Association.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane Edel, of Erie, and Jan (Perry) Fox, of Stahlstown, one son, Thomas (Janet) Edel, of Trappe, two sisters, Kay (the late Len) Bessenhopper, of Reno NV, and Jacqueline (Richard) Savacool, of Houston TX, one brother, Jay (Mary Lea) Edel, of Emporium, six grandchildren, Angela Wencil, Melissa McFeely, Emily Edel-Keith, Sarah Edel-Keith, Matthew Edel, Kristen Edel, five great grandchildren, Ava McFeely, Carter McFeely, Sydney McFeely, Harper McFeely, and Nikolas Wencil, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers, Fred "Butch" Edel, and Lamont "Monty" Edel.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in St. Bernard Church, with the Rev. Raymond Gramata, Pastor as Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc.

Memorials and contributions may be made to American Cancer Research, Parkinson Research, or to charity of the donor’s choice.
