Ronald S. Kloss

Ronald S. Kloss 73, of Bradford, passed away peacefully at Olean General Hospital on December 25, 2021. Though his passing was unexpected, he was thankfully surrounded by his loving family during the holiday season.

Ron was born in Bradford, on May 25, 1948. He graduated from Bradford Area High School in 1967. He attended the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford with a focus on journalism.

On October 3, 1970, in St. Bernard Church he married Molly J. Schessler.

Ron started working at the Bradford Era as a proofreader in 1967. He became Sports Editor at the Era in 1970. He served as Sports Editor for the next 34 years, with a passion for local high school sports. Though he demonstrated the highest level of journalistic integrity in his articles, his favorite team was the Bradford Owls. His work at the Bradford Era spanned over 5 decades. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his family and visiting Allegheny State Park with his wife, Molly. He was a longtime supporter of the Don Raabe Big 30 Charities Classic. Ron also served as a past president of Bradford Little League.

Ron is survived by his loving wife Molly, of 51 years, his son, Ronald “Alan”, daughter in law Rachael Kloss, grandchildren, Aaron, Olivia and Jordan Kloss. His mother, Florence Kloss, two sisters Nancy Kloss and Elaine Kloss-Gonzalez, one brother Greg Kloss, two great grandchildren, Brantley Kloss and Annie Howes, his loving “Water” sisters and brothers, as well as other family and friends. This includes his dear “Recess” buddies at Tim Horton’s.

Ron is preceded in death by his father, Stephen J. Kloss who died May 29, 1994, and his son Brian J. Kloss, who died October 15, 2006 .

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to a charity of your choice. Though sad and heartbroken at this moment, his family is comforted by the peacefulness of knowing that Ron is now fishing with his dearly missed son Brian and enjoying a long overdue cup of coffee with his dad, Steve.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard’s Church on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at 2:00 PM.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc.

It is not often that a small town like Bradford produces an icon. On Christmas day this year, we lost one when long time sports editor at the Bradford Era, Ron Kloss, passed away at the age of 73. When I began shooting photos for the paper in 1999, Ron and Joe Vinelli were firmly entrenched as the sports department. I remember the first football game I shot at Bradford high, it was pouring rain and I was trying to figure out how to get a good photo and keep my camera dry. I looked down the sideline and saw Ron hobbling around on his cane while holding an umbrella and jotting down the notes he would later turn in to a story. That moment was an inspiration to me. I learned then what it took to do this job the way it should be done and I always try to uphold the standards Ron set. I remember the times I would ride to Big 30 practices with Ron to Port Allegany. We had some lively conversations as he drove his preferred back country route through the middle of nowhere that he said was a shortcut. I never was too sure whether or not it was a shortcut but they were fun trips nonetheless. The Era has not been the same since he retired. Others have come in and done the job but something is missing. There was an ineffable quality to Ron’s presence in that tiny room pounding out stories on his keyboard that will never come again. Somewhere along the line he became synonymous with Bradford sports. When you thought of Bradford high school sports, Ron Kloss was the first name that came to mind. He was an icon… and he will be missed.

Molly, A "water " will be truly missed. When my boys were little he enjoyed taking them to his fishing spot and teach them what he enjoyed. When I think of Ron it was always go big, truck, tractor, ATV and marrying into a big loving family and enjoying the outside. We love you Ron. We are here for you sis.
