Mary Sue VanHoutte

Mary Sue VanHoutte, 88, of New Oxford, died peacefully Monday evening, June 13, 2022 at The Brethren Home in Cross Keys Village.

Born April 7, 1934, in Bradford, she was the daughter of Otho B Chatley and Esther M Chatley. 

She was married to James J VanHoutte at St. Bernard Church on October 15, 1955. 

Mary Sue received an Associate’s Degree in 1955 from Rochester Institute of Technology.  She returned to college in 1975 and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

She was employed by the Bell Telephone Company for over 20 years.  After graduating from the University of Pittsburg in 1979, she began her career with the United Way of Bradford and worked for 17 years as Executive Director until her retirement in 1996.

After retirement, she volunteered for many years as a Surgical Liaison of the Bradford Medical Center, the American Red Cross Blood Mobile program and for Meals on Wheels.  She was active for 35 years in the Zonta Women’s Literacy Club, Red Hat Group, and Order of the Eastern Star.  She was also a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of Ascension in Bradford where she served on the Vestry, Altar Guild, Episcopal ECW, as an Usher and with the Vacation Bible School.  She also served on many Boards including EMS, National Fuel, McKean County CARE, Red Cross, Zonta and the Episcopal Church.

Mary Sue is survived by two sons, Kenneth M VanHoutte and his wife Pamela of Gettysburg, and Jeffrey J. VanHoutte of Charlotte NC; two grandsons Matthew C VanHoutte and Aaron M VanHoutte of Gettysburg; nieces Linda Ralls of Shamong NJ, Mary Ann Hudson of Pottstown, and Jeanne Terns of St. Petersburg FL; nephew Robert Chatley of Plano TX; cousin, Tom Neilly of Bradford and several grandnieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her husband James, her parents, her brother James Chatley and his wife Evelyn.

Family will receive friends on Friday June 17, 2022, from 3 to 5pm & 7 to 9pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc. 33 South Avenue. Friends are also invited to attend funeral services on Saturday at 11:00 am in the Episcopal Church of Ascension with Rev. Stacey Fussell, Rector as Celebrant. Committal services and burial will follow in Willow Dale Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the McKean County SPCA, the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Bradford or the charity of the donor’s choice.
